The CIEC High Adventure Climbing Team
Presents
The CIEC Instructor-in-Training Apprenticeship Program
The CIEC climbing Instructor
apprenticeship program in four parts is designed to lead instructor candidates
with little or no climbing
experience through the process of obtaining the training, practice, and
evaluation to qualify as a BSA
Climbing Instructor.
Training is based on
BSA safety standards outlined
in Climb On Safely,
Topping Out, and
Challenge by choice.
-
The first step is to take the
CIEC 1 day Unit Leader Climbing Awareness Course (A Introduction
to Rock Climbing
for unit leaders)
to learn
BSA
guild lines, basic knowledge of rock climbing/rappelling, and the resources needed
to take their unit climbing in a outdoor setting.
-
The second step is to take the 1
day CIEC Climbing Instructor in Training Course (A bridge between
the introduction to rock climbing and the practical applications and skills
needed to become a
BSA rock climbing instructor) this course starts
instructors-in-training on the road to becoming a safe
BSA
climbing instructor. It teachers skills like climbing knots, how to stay safe up
high, personal safety equipment and introduces basic top
rope anchoring and anchoring systems, concluding with resources to gain further instruction and experience.
-
The third step is to apprentice under a CIEC Instructors, bsaonbelay staff
or a private guide service to practice setting
anchors, running program, and learning all skills required of a
BSA climbing instructor.
After a minimum of 3 troop outings you can ask your climbing
instructors to evaluate your progress and skill level to determine if you are ready to take the CIEC Climbing Instructor Course or if
you need more training and practice.
-
The forth
step, upon recommendation of your climbing
instructors, is to take the 3 day CIEC
Climbing Instructor Qualification Course to become a qualified
BSA climbing instructor. But
remember "Keep Training"
to maintain your skills.
